DRESS CODE
It can be seen from the pictures above that a class following dress code makes it easier for the teacher to see and correct technique.
The Dance & Fitness Studio requires a dress code for a few simple reasons.
1. Technique correction and Injury Prevention. Teachers can see how a dancer is holding their body, easily, when they are in the required dance clothes. Over rotation or forced rotation can be easily corrected if the teacher is able to see the mistake. Additionally, correct dance shoes won't be slippery or stick to our professional dance flooring. When all dancers are in the same gear, a teacher can easily spot a lifted hip, an under turned foot or an over rotated arm.
2. Cohesion. At The Dance & Fitness Studio, we think dancers learn best when they can concentrate on lessons and not what their fellow classmates are wearing. When the whole class is dressed similarly, they are a TEAM!
3. Our Recitals! The Dance & Fitness Studio traditionally presents a Christmas Recital each December and our Dress Code is often the basis for our costumes. Dancers can wear their base dancewear with an additional costume piece. Because we have this dress code, we do not need to order expensive costumes to make our dancers look great onstage for recital. We are able to provide costumes at no extra cost to you partially because of this dress code.
Wiggles & Giggles, Baby Ballet,
Pre-dance, and Combo Classes:
Option 1: Pink leotard, pink tights, pink ballet shoes, tap shoes (for tap combo classes). Ballet shoes or jazz shoes are acceptable for hip hop combo classes. Pink skirts are permitted.
Option 2: Black or white shirt or leotard (must be form-fitting), black dance pants, ballet shoes, tap shoes (for tap combo classes) Ballet shoes or jazz shoes are acceptable for hip hop combo classes.
Hair: Bun or pony tail. Shorter hair still needs to be pulled back away from the face and off the neck.
Ballet I, Ballet II, Ballet II/III
Option 1: Light blue leotard, pink tights, pink ballet shoes. Short skirts are permitted.
Option 2: Black, white or light blue shirt or leotard (must be form fitting), black dance pants, ballet shoes
Hair: Long hair should be in a bun. Shorter hair still needs to be pulled back away from the face and off the neck.
Tap 1, Tap 2, Tap 3*
Option 1: Light blue leotard, pink tights, tap shoes. Skirts and black dance pants are permitted. (*If the student is in a different color leotard for a ballet class, they may wear that color leotard instead).
Option 2: Black, white or light blue shirt or leotard (must be form fitting), black dance pants, black tap shoes
Hair: Bun or pony tail. Shorter hair still needs to be pulled back away from the face and off the neck.
Ballet III, Ballet IV
Option 1: Dark blue leotard, pink tights, pink ballet shoes.
Short skirts are permitted.
Option 2: Black, white or dark blue shirt or leotard (shirts must be form fitting), black dance pants/leggings,
ballet shoes
Hair: Long hair should be in a bun. Shorter hair still needs to be pulled back away from the face and off the neck.
Tap 3, Tap 4*
Option 1: Dark blue leotard, pink tights, tap shoes. Skirts and dance pants are permitted. (*If the student is in a different color leotard for a ballet class, they may wear that color leotard instead).
Option 2: Black, white or dark blue shirt or leotard (must be form fitting), black dance pants, black tap shoes
Hair: Bun or pony tail. Shorter hair still needs to be pulled back away from the face and off the neck.
Ballet V
Option 1: Red leotard, pink tights, pink ballet shoes.
Short skirts are permitted.
Option 2: Black, white or red shirt or leotard (shirts must be form fitting), black dance pants,
black ballet shoes
Hair: Long hair should be in a bun. Shorter hair still needs to be pulled back away from the face and off the neck.
Pre-Pointe
Students in pre-pointe may wear any color leotard or form-fitting shirt they choose. Usually this is the same as the ballet technique class for which the student is simultaneously enrolled, though a different color may be worn if desired.
Tap 5, Tap 6*
Option 1: Red leotard, pink tights, tap shoes. Short skirts and dance pants are permitted. (If the student is in a different color leotard for a ballet class, they may wear that color leotard instead).
Option 2: Black, white or red shirt or leotard (shirts must be form fitting), black dance pants,
black tap shoes.
Hair: Bun or pony tail. Shorter hair still needs to be pulled back away from the face and off the neck.
Ballet VI, VII
Option 1: Black leotard, pink tights, pink ballet shoes. Short skirts are permitted. Black leggings, shorts, tank tops and other danceable clothes are also permitted in adult classes.
Option 2: Black or white shirt or leotard (shirts must be form fitting), black dance pants, black ballet shoes
Hair: Long hair should be in a bun. Shorter hair still needs to be pulled back away from the face and off the neck.
Pre-Pointe/Pointe
Students in pre-pointe/pointe may wear any color leotard or form-fitting shirt they choose. Usually this is the same as the ballet technique class for which the student is simultaneously enrolled, though a different color may be worn if desired.
Hip Hop1, Hip Hop 2
Option 1: Light or dark blue leotard (may match the color of leotard required for a different class), pink tights, Jazz or Hip hop shoes. Skirts and dance pants are permitted. Studio shirts are also permitted instead of a leotard.
Option 2: Black, white, dark blue or studio shirt, black dance pants, black Hip hop shoes
Hair: Bun or pony tail. Shorter hair still needs to be pulled back away from the face and off the neck.
Hip Hop 3, Hip Hop 4
Option 1: Any color leotard and black dance pants. Hip Hop Shoes.
Option 2: Black, white or studio shirt, black dance pants, black Hip hop shoes.
Hair: Bun or pony tail. Shorter hair still needs to be pulled back away from the face and off the neck.
Modern/Musical Theatre
Option 1: Black leotard, black leggings, bare feet. Skirts are permitted. Black shorts, tank tops and other danceable clothes are also permitted in this class.
Option 2: Black, white or studio shirt, (shirt should be form fitting) black dance pants, bare feet.
Hair: Bun or pony tail. Shorter hair still needs to be pulled back away from the face and off the neck.
Although it may seem unnecessary to parents or people unfamiliar with the dance world, dance dress code has been around for centuries, and exists to make class more focused and structured. Dance requires a great deal of discipline and giving your dancer a set dress code helps them to understand simple rules.
When children wear their proper dance attire, it reminds them of where they are-class, and not on a play date or on the playground. This gets them in the mindset of learning. Plus, when children all wear their assigned dress code, they are much less likely to be distracted by their clothing and the clothing of others. Additionally, when hair is pulled back securely, students won’t be be as likely to play with their hair or need to push it out of their face for the majority of their class time or put the class on hold while asking the teacher to fix their hair.
Another reason dance dress code is important is so that teachers can properly correct the students. Dance, and especially ballet attire makes the lines and body placement much more visible to the instructor, and can help your child dance correctly and safely. This grows even more important the older your child gets.
Not only does the dress code help with the class, but dressing like a dancer makes you feel more...like a dancer. Students in their proper dance attire are typically so much more eager to learn and feel like they’re a part of a group that has to work together. So please, do your best to observe the dress code. If you need help with any aspect of it, please don’t hesitate to ask a staff member before or after class.
